I know what you’re thinking: Is he really comparing fatherhood to being a cosmetic injector? While there’s no comparison to the joy of being a dad, this past weekend I couldn’t help but recognize the similarities. Here are four simple truths that I’ve learned over and over again in fatherhood and as an ND cosmetic injector in Kelowna and Kamloops:
1. Patience is everything.
Let me preface this by saying our twins are the best, genuinely good kids but…that doesn’t mean patience isn’t needed! We are in the midst of potty training our 21-month old kiddos and if that doesn’t teach you patience, I’m not sure what does. Just like with kids, you really need to have patience with your cosmetic injections—and on multiple levels. First off, it takes up to 14 days for your botox to be in full effect and up to 7 days for your filler swell to completely subside revealing your true results. And what is perhaps even more important to note is that you will not receive your optimal results in one treatment. To properly build filler, which is the only way to achieve natural-looking results, you will need to slowly increase the volume. Similarly, you and your cosmetic injector may need to experiment with the number of units and brand of neuromodulator that your muscles will respond best to. Patience is often the answer and that rings loud and true in both potty training and cosmetic injections.
2. Less is more.
For any parents reading this, I know you’ll understand completely when I say kids prefer the box over the toy. With our twins creeping up to their second birthday, I know I’m going to continue to learn this lesson as we spend a fortune on the latest and greatest toy just for them to play with the wrapping paper. But can any of us actually say we are surprised? No, because we know less is more. When it comes to cosmetic injections, I preach the same lesson. Overfilling of filler will only cause a patient to appear older than they are. When it comes to both botox and dermal fillers, I believe in a long-term solution, never providing too much too soon.
3. There will always be more to learn.
There is nothing to humble you like parenthood. Marissa and I are learning something new every day from our little humans. Somehow in the midst of trying to teach them life skills, they are teaching us how to live. In my industry, both cosmetic injections and Naturopathic Medicine, best practices are always evolving. As new research and products are released, our technique and approach must adapt. I am always seeking to further my education as a cosmetic injector and ND, keeping my finger on the pulse of what’s going on so my patients don’t have to. I know I will never be done learning how to be a better dad and better at my professional craft.

4. It is rewarding.
Where do I even begin with this one? Being a parent is the hardest, simultaneously
