What is iron and why is it important?

Let’s talk iron. This essential mineral is a big deal for your body. Iron helps transport oxygen in your blood, plays a crucial role in energy production, and keeps your enzymes functioning smoothly. Plus, it’s key for maintaining a healthy immune system and supporting cognitive development. In short, iron is like the unsung hero that keeps everything running behind the scenes.

What are signs and symptoms of iron deficiency?

Iron deficiency, also called iron deficiency anemia, has several signs and symptoms that show the body doesn’t have enough of this important mineral. Some of these signs include feeling very tired even after resting, having pale skin especially on the face, lips, and inner eyelids, and feeling short of breath because the blood can’t carry enough oxygen. Other signs include having cold hands and feet because blood isn’t flowing well, feeling dizzy or lightheaded, getting headaches, or having nails that break easily. Sometimes, people might feel like their heart is beating fast (palpitations), have restless legs, or crave unusual things like ice or dirt. Hair loss, especially in women, can also happen.

What causes iron deficiency?

Iron deficiency can happen for many reasons. One common cause is not eating enough foods with iron, so the body doesn’t have access to the amount that it needs. Losing blood over a long time, from heavy periods or bleeding in the stomach or intestines, can also make someone low in iron. Some health problems, like celiac disease or problems with the intestines, can stop the body from taking in enough iron from food. When the body needs more iron than usual, like during pregnancy or when growing quickly, it can use up iron stores faster. Certain medical conditions, medicines, or giving blood often can also make iron levels drop.

How do you treat iron deficiency?

Treating iron deficiency involves a multi-faceted approach tailored to individual needs and the severity of the condition. Initially, increasing dietary intake of iron-rich foods such as red meat, poultry, fish, beans, leafy greens, and fortified cereals is recommended. Oral iron supplements may also be prescribed to boost iron levels, often accompanied by vitamin C-rich foods to enhance absorption. Addressing underlying medical conditions contributing to iron deficiency is crucial, such as managing gastrointestinal bleeding or chronic kidney disease. Alternatively, iron infusions are a quick, efficient way to give your iron levels a boost and leave you feeling energized quickly.

What happens during an iron infusion appointment?

An iron infusion is a medical treatment where iron is administered intravenously. This method is used when someone needs to raise their iron levels quickly, in the most efficient manner. During an iron infusion, a healthcare professional administers a solution containing iron directly into a vein, usually in the arm, over a specified period of time. The infusion is performed in a clinical setting under medical supervision to monitor for any adverse reactions. I offer my patients  intravenous (IV) iron infusions at Total Health Clinic in Kamloops, BC.

How do I prepare for an iron infusion appointment?

If you haven’t seen me at Total Health, you will need to book an initial visit. During this appointment we will go over your health and medical history and determine if an Iron infusion is right for you.  If you have recent blood work (including Ferritin) please bring them with you, if not I will send you home with a lab requisition to have your Ferritin checked. If your Ferritin levels are not optimal. One we have determined that you qualify for an Iron IV, I will send a prescription to the pharmacy and schedule your IV.

The day of your appointment, please have a good meal before you come and make sure you are hydrated. Additionally, wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the arm or forearm, where the infusion will likely be administered. .

Bringing necessary documents such as a list of current medications and allergies, is also important. Finally, communicate any changes in health status or medications since the consultation appointment and ask any remaining questions or concerns to the healthcare provider to ensure a successful iron infusion appointment. And of course, feel free to ask any last-minute questions. You can reach me via email at hello@drkalebfalk.com or by calling Total Health Clinic directly at 250-374-9700.

How many iron infusions will I need before I start to feel better?

The number of iron infusion treatments you’ll need depends on your individual needs. If your iron deficiency is due to a loss of blood, a single treatment might be enough to restore your iron levels. However, if your deficiency is diet-related (such as from a vegan diet), you might need follow-up infusions.

Some people start feeling better after just one iron infusion, especially if their iron levels were very low and the infusion quickly replenishes their stores. However, for those with more severe or chronic iron deficiency, multiple infusions may be necessary to fully restore iron levels and alleviate symptoms.

Generally, you can expect to see improvements in your symptoms within five to seven days after your first treatment. These improvements will continue until around the two to three-week mark. I recommend follow-up bloodwork six weeks after your infusions to monitor your levels and determine the next steps.
